I had a 'Sun-Glo' bulb for my tank which gave out a yellow light. This bulb stopped working and after taking it to my local aquatics shop for a replacement, they have given me an 'Aqua-Glo' bulb which gives out a brighter white crystal blue light.

Some bulbs will bring out the colors in your fish better than others (depending on the color of bulb and fish). An Aqua-GLO is a well rounded bulb (in color) for a basic fish-only freshwater tank, with most common fish.
For planted tanks, you want to make sure the bulb is producing the right color light for the plants to use. Though in most cases you're better off worrying about HOW MUCH light, NOT what color.
